A Race to the Bottom

Updated: 18 minutes ago

We’re bringing you this special update because administration brought an absolutely outrageous staffing proposal to the bargaining table yesterday (Thurs, Jan 9th).

Their plan would gut the staffing guidelines in our contract, increasing the burden on Michigan Medicine nurses and the risks to our patients.

Nurses must be united and strong in speaking out against this aggressive attack on the protections we have fought so hard for. Please add your name to our safe staffing petition now.

You can see the staffing grid that management is proposing here (and included below). Their proposal includes:

  • Removing the 1:1 ratio in all ICUs, making ratios optional

  • Eliminating ratios for the ED waiting room

  • Drastically reducing our ability to file staffing disputes

Their proposal essentially nullifies our landmark $250,000+ NICU staffing dispute settlement - increasing management discretion and decreasing management accountability.

Plus they’re proposing that if a nurse calls in sick on a weekend, management can make them work an extra weekend on their next schedule.

Instead of working to solve the staffing crisis at Michigan Medicine, admin is proposing steps that will actually make it worse.

They claim that we will still meet national benchmarks, but we all know that eroding staffing guidelines will only put Michigan Medicine in a race to the bottom.

And we all know that this is really about money for MM. They’re just trying to codify the unacceptable status quo so they can keep getting away with it.

We won’t stand for it, and we know you won’t either.

In solidarity,

Your MNA-UMPNC Bargaining Team

P.S. We need more Communication Team Leaders (CTLs) so we can make sure nurses on all units are engaged! Learn more and sign up here.
