July 1- Bargaining Update

Dear MNA-UMPNC member,

Our contract expired on June 30, 2022 and while we were hoping to bring you better news, we continue to fight for a fair contract and have provided proposals to management all week. As of today, Michigan Medicine is still asking for concessions – 101 of them. This is unacceptable and we will not agree to them. In order to protect our members who should receive their anniversary step increase in the month of July, we sent the employer a proposal that would allow these nurses to move on the current wage scale before the contract expired. Management refused and instead are withholding the wages we deserve. While they could provide these raises in good faith, Michigan law prohibits retroactive pay for public employees and management is using this as a bargaining chip in hopes we will take concessions. Additionally, the employer’s latest economic proposal still doesn’t go far enough to meet our demands or keep up with the current rate of inflation. We know there is more at stake than money – safe patient ratios; a fair work/life balance, including being able to take time off; and maintaining our ability to work through problems by mutual agreement rather than punitive measures. Now is the time to stand together to demand a fair contract that protects patient safety and gives nurses the wages and working conditions we deserve.

It is vital that we have a strong showing to send a united message that we will not stop advocating for our patients.
